GRUE 2022 - A WINTERLAND MADE FROM WASTE MATERIALS

TAKE THE VIRTUAL GRUE 2022 TOUR

We realise not everyone was able to make the journey to our little seaside town, so here is the next best thing. Grab a cup of tea and explore the rooms and alleyways of Grue. Keep an eye out for clues and see if you can help Moth work out what is going wrong. Made in collaboration with our good friend and expert virtual 360 tour designer Graham Sykes, we are thrilled to bring the GRUE experience to you in the digital domain.

BUILDING GRUE PART II

After the success of the first edition of GRUE, (our community-built cardboard winter wonderland from 2021), we knew the follow-up experience had to be extra special. With the invaluable help from the super production team ARCADE, Steve's ambitious visions were brought to life by over 400 strong from our local community. Keeping with our themes of recycling and reusing, many elements were repurposed, such as walls and the TV Set, but GRUE Part II was a fresh experience that featured hidden pathways, a Moth Investigation Bureau, and a giant beast called Tolenn.

FROM WASTE TO WINTER WONDERLAND

Set again in the Old Parcels Office Artspace, GRUE II was constructed by Steve, Arcade, friends and families from our seaside town and the surrounding area. The project again brought all age groups together to make an amazing experience entirely from waste materials. Trees, houses and hidden creatures were set up in immersive dioramas that were lit beautifully for all to see. Educational and fun interactive points were interspersed throughout, detailing a mysterious Moth Investigator's findings. Moth had gathered a disturbing dossier detailing the excess waste produced by a fictitious corporate giant, Large & Foul, who's nefarious practices are clogging the world with plastics.

THE INCREDIBLE PRODUCTION TEAM OF ARCADE

Just like last year, the team at ARCADE were instrumental and essential to making GRUE come alive. Rach, Sophie, Shan, and Jen putt full days and nights into installation, networking, securing materials and pulling creatives together under tight deadlines, while helping us realise ambitious elements of the experience. On the sound design team, Nick Fall from Ideosound and  engineer/musician Jim Taylor brought awesome soundscapes and field recordings to the project to fully immerse visitors in the world of GRUE.

THE GIANT STONE BEAST

Introducing Tolenn! You might have seen the mini version of our mighty beast in our posters and marketing material, but here sits the completed full-size creature. If the beast stood up, it would reach over 4 meters in height. This is the biggest thing built for GRUE so far and indeed the biggest piece Steve has ever made from cardboard.

BUILDING TOGETHER

We feel overwhelming gratitude for the team at ARCADE, Yorkshire Coast Bid and Arts Council England for their support and to all the creatives who pitched in. Without these amazing people and our incredible local community, there would be no GRUE. As always, we are dreaming big and scaling up for more events throughout 2023 so watch this space and hopefully we'll see you in person at the end of this year.
